Ahead of the formation of the APC, several political parties, including the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), the New Peoples Democratic Party (N-PDP), which Atiku can be said to be a member, came together to form today's ruling party.

How many people contested against Buhari

The maiden presidential primary of the APC was conducted on December 11, 2014, in which Atiku, former President Muhammadu Buhari, Rabiu Kwankwaso and former Imo state governor, Rochas Okorocha.

Buhari emerged as the flagbearer of the new political party, which later went ahead to defeat the then incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 general election. Atiku subsequently dumped the APC and returned to the PDP.

In 2019, Atiku contested against Buhari and President Tinubu in the 2023 election. The former vice president lost the two elections, and he challenged their results up to the Supreme Court level.

    Ho the PDP crisis started

Following the outcome of the 2023 election and the defeat suffered at the Supreme Court, the PDP has been in a leadership tussle, and Atiku appeared to be seeking another platform to pursue his presidential ambition in the next general election.
