Nigerian man shares experience after stopping tithe

The man stated that the children of God do not need to pay money to the Lord before he would bless them.

He said even earthly parents do not demand money from their children before giving them good things in life.

According to him, the gospel saying one needs to pay tithe and offerings before being blessed was 'transactional'.

"So there is a door I have left and that is the door of religion. There was a time in my life I was being exploited all in the name of loving God. They used every way to get money from us. They made it look as though God is in a transactional business with us. So one fateful night, I was angry. Meanwhile, I have given everything I had and nothing was coming forth. I wasn't seeing anything. So what they said in the Bible wasn't applicable in my own situation?
"So I asked myself one question: if my earthly father could afford everything I have, expecting nothing from me, how much more my heavenly father? But I chose that day to fight my beliefs. I said I was going to go to church, but I will not pay tithe, I will not pay offering, nothing. From that day I took that life-changing decision to now, there has been an exponential growth in my life, including my finances," he wrote.

Reacting to the story, a Catholic priest, Reverend Father Oselumhense Anetor who is the priest in charge of St Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ahia and Udakpa, Ubiaja Esan South East LGA of Edo state said some churches make the tithe topic seem transactional.

We preach this to poor Church folks because we hope they'll bring all they have to us when we teach them that God is a transactional God. The threats are usually to ensure maximum compliance. Does threatening people really seem like something God would do?"

A cleric in the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Kunle, has reacted to the story of the man who claimed his finances improved after he stopped paying tithes and offerings in church.

Speaking with Legit.ng, the pastor emphasised that tithing is not just a payment but an obligation for believers.

"You don't pay tithe, you give it. It's not yours," Kunle stated.

He explained that financial success is not solely tied to tithing but rather to obedience to certain principles.
